Lyric and I went to the baseball game to watch the Razorbacks play! Lyric really enjoys the outdoors and she loves baseball so she really liked going to the game. I also recently went to Mexico for spring break and got Lyric and I friendship bracelets. This made Lyric very happy!
I had such a fun time working with Ms. K’s performing arts class today! Ms. K is putting on a talent show in May so she is trying to get everyone’s individual acts figured out. For the first part of class we helped each student figure out what they wanted to do for their act. Most of the students wanted to sing and dance! Ms. K and I helped the students find the right song for them and even let them practice singing and dancing to different songs until they found the perfect song for them. It was so awesome watching these talented students enjoy singing and dancing to different songs. After we figured out each students’ act/ song, we practiced the students’ dance/ song they are singing together in their performance in May. The song they are singing and dancing to is “This Is Me” from the movie, Greatest Showman. The students did a great job remembering their formations and their moves they choreographed to the music. We had to work on the lyrics they had to remember, but I think the performance is going to be so awesome! I am so proud of the hard work these students have put in for this performance. The last thing we did during this class was I got to teach the students how to call the Hogs. I am a member of the University of Arkansas Dance Team, so Ms. K wanted me to teach them some of our sideline moves. The students loved learning how to call the Hogs. I also taught the students some moves we do to the fight song. This was one of the most fun things I have done with these students. You could tell they were really enjoying themselves, which is something I really love to see.
Today I got to work with the same class again! Miss K was not able to make it to part of the class because she was getting CPR certified. So, the director’s assistant substituted for her. During this class, we were able to accomplish a lot of things. The first thing we learned about was fairytales. The students came up with a definition for a fairytale and we talked about certain themes that are always present in fairytales. After learning about what a fairytale is, we acted out a fairytale. The substitute gave each student a character and she put up the script of the fairytale up on the screen so everyone could read from it. The fairytale we acted out was, “Aladdin”. Each student did such a great job putting themselves out there and getting into their character. It was so fun to see even the shy students get up and portray their character perfectly! The students really enjoyed this activity, everyone was laughing and smiling. Once we finished acting out the story of Aladdin we took a short break. Miss K was able to come back to class after the break and we played a very fun game as a class. We played, “Heads Up”. Each student wore a band around their head, which held a card on their forehead. Each card had a word on it that the rest of the class had to act out. The person who has the card on their forehead guessed what their word was from the clues the rest of class gave him or her. This was the most fun I had with this class. Everyone was laughing and really enjoying themselves. We went around to each person and let them guess their word.
Lyric is my sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters. We went to 3 Crazy Berries and got ice cream. We talked for a long time about several different things but I think her and I have really bonded after this day. I feel that Lyric now feels she can come to me for anything, which makes me really happy. Lyric and I also went to my parent's house and she got to meet my family. We also went shopping and I got her a cute shirt she kept eyeing! It was a really fun day!
Today I had the opportunity of working with the same class. Miss K is the teacher of this class and the class is a performing arts class. Today was a little different than normal because Life Styles Inc. is having a luncheon, to celebrate all of the students’ hard work and success. Because of the luncheon, this class went a little shorter than normal. It was so fun to see all of the students’ excitement for the luncheon. Each student was very proud of the hard work they accomplished and I absolutely loved that were being celebrated today. During this class we watched the movie called, “Leap”. This movie is an animated movie and it is about a young girl who strives to be a ballerina. This movie did a great job showing the students what ballerinas wear and some of the complicated dance moves they do. I particularly loved watching this movie because I grew up taking ballet classes. Miss K asked me to even bring in my point shoes some time so I can show the students what point shoes look like in real life. I am also a member of the University of Arkansas Dance Team. So, Miss K asked me to please get some of my teammates together and come in to their class and teach them a side line we do on the football field. The students were all so excited for this and I am really looking forward to introducing my teammates to these amazing students. One of the students actually knew my coach so I was able to take a picture with him. His name is Brandon and he is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. Brandon was so excited to take a picture and insisted that we send it to my coach.
Lyric is my sister from Big Brothers Big Sisters. I got to take her to the women's basketball game. Lyric loves to dance so I got to introduce her to my teammates on the University of Arkansas Dance Team. Lyric took a picture with the girls. Lyric also met Sooie and Big Red. We had a blast together and I am so glad she had such a good experience.
My teammates and I put together a dance class for the Boys & Girls Club to come to and show off their moves. We came up with a combo for them to learn and they broke up into groups and performed the dance for each other. All of the kids really enjoyed themselves. I had so much fun bonding with these kids over something we both love to do, which is dance!
Lyric is my little sister from Big Brother Big Sisters. She is the sweetest girl and I absolutely love hanging out with her. This was our first time hanging out together since we were matched together. Lyric had never been to High Rise before so I took her there. We had so much fun and I am so excited to grow this friendship.
Life Styles is a school for adults who have a disability. I specifically help out with the Performing Arts class. The teacher's name for this class is Miss K. She is the most kind hearted person I have met. This day I helped the class write funny poems. This was super fun because I got to see the students use their creative minds. The students really enjoyed creating poems and there were many laughs. We as a class created 6 different poems. After the students had a short 10-minute break, we worked on the students’ dance performance they will be performing in May. This was my very favorite thing we did during this session. Miss K decided she wanted the students to dance/ sing the song, “This Is Me” from the recent movie, Greatest Showman. The students already had some of the dance choreographed. Miss K even asked me to put some of my dance background to use and help choreograph some dance moves to put in the dance. All of the students really enjoyed dancing and singing this song. My heart was so happy watching these students enjoy themselves. I totally plan on coming to this performance in May and watch these talented students perform their hearts out!
