This day was a bit difficult at first because of the language barrier since the child's homework was all in Spanish. However, I overcame that obstacle with the minimal Spanish I do know and we were able to get her homework done. I also enjoyed being able to play outside with the kids since usually I am inside helping kids with their homework until I have to leave. It was fun to play games like tag and hide and seek especially since the kids seemed to enjoy having me be it.
This experience was great and everyone was so nice and helpful.
Knowing that just a small portion of your time on the weekends can make a big difference in the community made this service very worthwhile. I am glad that I got to participate in this event. When I first got there, I was assigned to organize the closet. I love organizing so they were really speaking my language when they asked me to clean it out. It was a great feeling seeing the immense difference afterwards. Then I helped do inventory for all the donated clothes and the best part about that is knowing that the clothes will be given to people who really need it during this upcoming winter season.
We continued to help the girls with their upcoming competition. I came before my class to help the girls choreograph
Today was a very fun day at Peace Pals. I was really close to not going because of school work, but I am so glad I went because once I got there, the same children I interacted with last time ended up being super excited that I came. I helped one of the girls with her reading and then helped one of the other kids with his math homework. That was a bit difficult because I am not that great at math and neither was he so helping him was very tedious and time consuming, but worth it especially after learning that he usually tries to finish his homework at PEACE PALS since his mom is unable to help him because she does not speak English and he is not able to translate it for her.
We continued to help the St. Peter's Cheer team
Today was a bit difficult because of the rain which caused a lot of confusion. But nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at PEACE PALS. I created a relationship with the fourth graders especially engaging them in the activity we were doing today - making maracas! I was able to have fun with the kids while also making sure they took care of their homework and got to read. I loved being able to help the kindergarteners with their homework especially since I have nephews the same age so I am experienced in teaching that grade level. The program itself is a great atmosphere for children and volunteers.
We continued to choreograph the routine for the competition
We helped St. Peter's Cheer team with their upcoming competition by choreographing a routine and teaching them proper technique. The girls seemed to really enjoy themselves!
I got to CTH early to help set up and then afterwards as a site leader for MLP, I got to facilitate my own group at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. We spent the day painting railings to make the church more beautiful and help out the church youth group. We had a very positive experience and I got the chance to meet a lot of different people and bond with my group.
It was a great experience to welcome freshmen students and assist them in moving into their dorms!
I spent the entire Summer as the head of the Heart LITs (Leaders in Training) by helping them do the organizational and logistical tasks of the camp without any pay. I was in charge of all mealtime duties, regular maintenance, teaching classes such as dance, yoga, and sewing, as well as arranging the schedule of when the LITs would replace the counselors during their time off as the overnight counselors of their cabins.
