So far my project is coming along pretty smoothly and I am enjoying my time with my family and friends every Saturday giving back to the community of Kent Washington. The time that the community is allowed to come up to the food bank and be served food from the team and I is 9am to 1pm every Saturday on the side of the building. I stay the entire time so that is about 4 hours every Saturday and I have gone about three times, so I have about 10-12 hours logged and completed so far and we still have a lot of time left to go in the semester, so I can potentially still get 20 or more hours logged. I am not sure on the exact number of how many families are served in this community, although the pastor does announce it sometimes, but I do know that it is in the hundreds because we always have a long line of people in the parking lot waiting to be served. And sometimes the line goes out of the parking lot into the street. If I need to get the actual numbers I can ask the director of the ministry and get it from them.

For a person or family to qualify for being served at the food pantry at New Beginnings Christian Fellowship they need to be a person or family of “low income” but because all of this work is non profit we do not do a thorough check on those coming up seeking assistance from us. We assume that they are being truthful and honest and serve those who walk or drive up. We have never turned anyone away, no matter what they looked like or what they were driving. My impressions of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, the church that I am volunteering for, is favorable. I do not feel pressure to attend church services unless I want to. And another reason why I find the organization very favorable is because of the work that they do for communities outside of the U.S. They help families in poverty stricken areas in Africa with building schools, and providing them access to health care and medicine. That, poverty in other countries, is something that we learned while taking this course that would not have had a huge impression on me before. This experience has been pleasing and I am glad that I am a part of something greater than just serving myself. The most valuable thing I can provide while I am at the food bank is my friendliness and happiness. People are coming from all over and are tired from work, or raising their children, or whatever they are experiencing in their lives and the least I could do is greet them with a smile and a great positive attitude.
