Coach Archie Duran Memorial Fund

About

When beloved educator and track coach Arcadio “Archie” Duran Jr. died in a bus accident bringing his Irvin High girls track team home from a track meet in Lubbock, he left a huge hole in the lives of his students, fellow teachers and administrators, family, friends and loved ones. Aside from being a coach and teacher, he was a brother, a son, a husband, father and a mentor

We decided to set up the fund to provide scholarships for the EPISD students that Duran cared so much about and to provide funds for teachers to purchase school supplies

Since forming the Archie Duran Memorial Fund, we had a 1-mile fun run, a 5K Run/ 1 Mile Walk, a car wash and four yard sales. So far, we have raised enough funds to provide six EPISD student-athletes with college scholarships to help them further their education, something our Coach Duran was very passionate about.

On Behalf of the Duran Family and the future generation THANK YOU for your donation!

A Letter from a Family Member....

How do I put into words a lifetime of memories and moments that make up who and what he was?  Arcadio “Archie” Duran was a special kind of person.  Our Mom often tells the story of how Archie was not your ordinary toddler, Archie wanted to run free.  So free that on several occasions, he broke the bars off his crib in order to be free to run around, play and enjoy his surroundings.  It makes sense that he would enjoy sports so much as it allowed him to be free and outdoors.  Archie began playing football and baseball at the young age of 8.  He attended Lee Elementary, Magoffin Middle School and went on to graduate from Irvin High School in 1988.  While at Magoffin Middle School, Archie joined the football and track teams.  Excelling as a student and athlete, it was then that his medal count began.  As a student at Magoffin, our brother Manny remembers how Archie would see fellow students struggling with their homework and would jump in to help.  Other times, unbeknownst to anyone, Archie would use his own money to buy lunch tickets for classmates who didn’t have money to purchase their own lunch.  Archie never talked about it but his younger brother observed this and knew that Archie was not only role model to him but to other classmates as well.  Archie’s generosity and selflessness were his natural values.

That was Archie from a young age, he was grounded in his convictions, believing that the right thing to do was to help and stand up for others. For example, Manny observed how Archie stood up for him on the playground but he also stood up for his friends and fellow students, defending them from bullies or stepping in for those he knew couldn’t defend themselves.
