Harborview Acute Care Patient Companions

About

Harborview Medical Center is offering a new opportunity to volunteer directly with patients. The largest number of those cared for at HMC are in ‘acute care’ units. These are not the ED or ICUs. Acute care patients are medically stable but are still too ill to go home or even to be transferred to a skilled nursing facility. Often hospitalized like this for weeks and even months, many of these folks become really lonely, anxious and bored. Many don’t have family that can visit and they need companionship. Staff members do enjoy visiting, but there’s never enough time for them to meet this need.
So volunteers to HMC can now designate their service to be an ‘Acute Care Companions’. Volunteers will be specially trained and supervised. They will spend an hour or so with each of 2-3patients on each weekly volunteer day. They will do what so many in Seattle know so well already: how to lead the way during conversation with someone brand new to them! Volunteers wishing to be even more entertaining will be quite welcome. Do you know some magic tricks? How to play Texas ‘Holdem. Would you rather chat while you take a patient for a walk? The possibilities are only limited by your talents. Come share them!
