The Desert Island Supply Co. (DISCO) is a non-profit creative writing and arts center located in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham, AL. DISCO programs serve schools and students in the Woodlawn feeder pattern and in the city of Birmingham through two primary programs: DISCO Afterschool and the Woodlawn Writers Corps. Afterschool programs occur Monday-Thursday at DISCO's explorer-themed headquarters in Woodlawn and include creative workshops such as Comic Lab, Poetry Club, Seekers of Stories, and more. The Woodlawn Writers Corps takes place in Oliver Elementary, Avondale Elementary, Putnam Middle, and Woodlawn High School during the school day. Students in the Corps meet weekly throughout the year for standards-based poetry workshops, during which they explore how poetry and language intersect with history, science, math, and art. The writing workshops are designed to be challenging and fun, with the main goal of strengthening the students' writing skills, intensifying their intellectual habits and giving them the creative tools they need to explore and document their worlds. At the end of each year of the Woodlawn Writers Corps, the Desert Island Supply Co. publishes a book of student poems. All proceeds from book sales go toward sustaining the Writers Corps. We are looking for volunteer teacher assistants for both our in-school and afterschool programs.
