About

Plarn OR (Plastic Bag Yarn) was developed as a way to provide pillows, bed mats, etc. for folx experiencing homelessness. (we use person-first language as a way to understand: when someone is experiencing a temporary situation; it does not encompass all of who they are, hence “person experiencing homelessness”) These plarn pieces are directly aiding in addressing issues stemmed from homelessness and financial hardship as a short-term alleviation of immediate needs. Creating sleeping mats also provides an easy way to recycle used plastic bags. More importantly, they provide warm layers of comfort-ability. These plastic mats are easy to clean and are lightweight.
Whether you choose to make plarn with us from the comfort of your home virtually/remote or come in person, this event will benefit our community.
If you choose to attend virtually/remote, you can either use plastic bags you have in your home or you can come by our office, located in Moseley Hall on the 3rd floor, to grab bags we have provided for you! Please come between the hours of 8 am-5 pm on Monday-Friday to pick up bags.
Our in-person capacity is limited to 12 people and is located on the 4th floor of Moseley Hall in the classroom space. If you choose to do the virtual session, there is no attendance limitation.
Here's the YouTube video for instructions on how to make the plarn into mats/beds for those experiencing homelessness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr_WHW_tGSE There are also some brief instructions on the 'Bags to Beds' website http://www.bagstobeds.org/directions.html
Once you have completed your plarn links, you can drop them office at our office in Moseley Hall on the 3rd floor between the hours of 8 am-5 pm on Monday-Friday. Our office will then deliver them to St. Joseph Catholic Church whose members crochet them together to make bed mats for folx experiencing homelessness and also partner with the "Bags to Beds" organization. When dropping off your links, please include a note with your name attached.

Participants understand that by RSVP'ing to this event, they will arrive at their designated time to ensure their spot and will support the physical distance guidelines in place by this event's organizers.
