About

The Patient Assistance Program (PAP) at the Rhode Island Free Clinic helps to leverage $250,000 annually in free name-brand medications for our patients. CVS provides free generic prescription medications for Clinic patients; however, name-brand medications with no generic alternatives are often necessary for patient treatment plans. Some medications (such as insulins) are vital to patient care yet would cost patients thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. Many pharmaceutical companies have services to provide low-income, uninsured individuals with free name-brand medications. However, applying for these medications can be difficult for our patients. The PAP program at the Rhode Island Free Clinic advocates for our patients and helps them navigate barriers to these services.
The Patient Assistance Program Intern will work directly with patients, providers, and pharmaceutical companies to connect patients to the necessary name-brand medications that they need. They are responsible for managing PAP applications, tracking refills, working with electronic medical records, and inventorying medication. Additionally, they will oversee a team of volunteers to complete necessary PAP Clinic functions.
This position will allow interns to develop the following skills:
  • Familiarization with facilities and programs providing uninsured/low income adults with free, comprehensive, quality healthcare.
  • Experience helping patients navigate barriers to healthcare
  • Practical experience with Social Determinants of Health in the Rhode Island community
  • Team management and project oversight
