About
Vaya organizes and teaches English classes for kids in Matagalpa, Nicaragua Monday through Thursday. The English program is based on learning through play. We introduce children to English as a second language through games, songs, and activities similar to the way they learn their mother tongue. We want children to have a positive, fun experience with English when they are first trying to learn it. This is the best way for them to form a strong English foundation and stay motivated to continue learning English throughout their adolescence.
Another program we are very proud to offer is a high school tutoring group. Children begin learning English in secondary school when they are 12 years old. Since their school day is shortened and goes from 12:00pm - 5:00pm, many of them struggle to learn the language and keep up with their homework. VAYA has formed a tutoring group before school, where these children can come and get the help they need and practice using their newly learned skills in conversations.
We are passionate about the impact that travel and service learning can have on an individual. Not only do our volunteers get the experience of empowering members of this community b, but they also participate in an experience that is transformative in their own lives.
We know that travel abroad can be exhilarating, but it can also be confusing at times and sometimes uncomfortable. All of our volunteers receive 24/7 support, airport pickup and transfer to accommodations, orientation, walking tour of Matagalpa, volunteer placement, 3 meals a day, optional Spanish classes and tandem program, and travel assistance with excursions. Upon successful completion of the program, each volunteer receives a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation.
