After-school Tutor for Chinese ELL Students

About

In this position, students will be:
--Tutoring 1st-5th with homework, reading and math.
--Leading learning activities, STEM activities, and team-building activities.
--Monitoring students' academic progress.

All tutors are required to go through 1 hour of orientation and program observation and 2.5 hours of mandatory volunteer training. Tutors will work mostly with ELL or new immigrant students that have limited English skills. For this position, a service-learning student should possess the following skills:
--be creative, resourceful, and able to work independently and function as a team player
--have good communication skills
--be organized and able to motivate bilingual youth

In working with CISC, we hope students will begin to understand the needs of bilingual, ELL, ESL students, their families, and the community and appreciate the diversity of cultural differences within the communities we serve.

The program runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm. Wednesday from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm Please choose your day(s) within the hours above.  Please plan on committing at least 2.5 hours a week to this organization. We encourage you to sign up for once or twice a week.  

Orientation Notes:

Group orientation will be held on weekdays from 10/1/2019 to 10/10/2019 at 3:00 pm; contact  Suzanna Hare (suzannah@cisc-seattle.org) or Wendy (diw@cisc-seattle.org) by email to introduce yourself as a volunteer, RSVP for one of these appointment times and obtain a CISC volunteer application as soon as you register.  Bring along the completed volunteer application form when you come for the orientation. The orientation will last 1 hour, including a brief program review and program observation in the classroom.

Please note that there is an additional mandatory volunteer training for all service-learning students. It will be held on 10/11/2019.
